Storage volumes, both what we have and what we're gaining, are large and growing. But if growth was all we had to worry about, if scale was the only factor, then maybe we'd be having different discussions around storage than we actually are. In fact, what's expected of storage, like speed, flexibility, and integration reflects the changing landscape of applications. And, if it's not too tautological, the changing expectations such workloads bring.

Our new storage market trends research report has full details, but here's the summary chart of which applications are driving storage growth. You may say, well, you're back to talking pure growth. But these apps wouldn't have much impact if they were not really affecting storage, and scale is a good place to start.

However, what tops the chart led by BI and analytics is a whole tranche of apps that are about immediacy and interaction with multiple systems, systems that could be owned, shared, on-prem, or in a totally separate organization. Whereas more traditional apps like e-mail and office productivity with their traditional storage demands were dominant just three years ago, they're only just ahead today while the growth and importance of newer and new storage demanding apps, like video surveillance, social media, and remote sensor data is dramatic and poised to take over.

These apps aren't just driving volume, they're helping to drive the intense interest in a changing storage world. Integration, convergence, cloud, and uber SDS tools. The full report is on our website.
